Profile

Shimizu was born in 1955, and he currently lives in Chiba Prefecture. Ten years ago, when he became convinced that digital SLR cameras had achieved a sufficient level of quality, he began taking photos, primarily of landscapes. He has since broadened his subjects beyond landscapes to pursue the beauty of stillness and that of action, including motorsports, railways, airplanes, urban spaces, factories at night, and overseas. Currently, he is also venturing into sports photos.
He is perpetually taking on new challenges. He was a winner in the 2017 Tokyo Camera Club "47 Photos of Japan" Contest, 2018 Tokyo Camera Club Photo Contest Instagram Category, and Visit Japan Photo Contest 2018, which was hosted by Japan National Tourism Organization.

Meigetsuin Temple in Kamakura, is famous as ajisai-dera or hydrangea temple. The seasonal view through the round window situated in the Main Hall is just beautiful. Photographers will need to wait in line from the Main Hall to take photos. And the line will be long, but when your turn comes, you'll get the best shooting position all for yourself. While you're waiting, you'd better have all the settings done on your camera, excluding the focus. Use a narrow aperture to keep the depth-of-field deep, and focus on the circular window frame to capture some nice sharp photos. Meigetsuin Temple is only a 50-minute drive from the Rugby World Cup venue, so do visit this spot too!

"The Red Brick Warehouse located in Yokohama Minato Mirai 21 district is a pair of historical buildings built by the Meiji Government. Having ended its role as a warehouse, it has been used as a filming location for TV dramas and movies since the 1980s. Now, there are fashionable shops and restaurants in it, and various events are held throughout the year at its Event Plaza. I recommend nighttime shooting. Illuminated after dark, the whole Red Brick Warehouse stands out, and no matter how you frame it, you'll get picturesque shots. You can also capture the gorgeous luxury liners anchored at Osanbashi Pier from the plaza facing the Yokohama Port."

Kugenuma Beach is a highly recommended sightseeing spot in the Shonan area. With Mt. Fuji on your right and Enoshima Island on your left, the scenery is so picture perfect, especially at dusk. As a photographer, you would hit your shutter button fascinated by the ever-changing skyscape. Surfing is another attraction of Kugenuma Beach. The surfing spot with such a beautiful backdrop draws many surfers, and various surfing competitions are held every month on-season.

Keihin Industrial Zone's night view has gained massive popularity recently. There are several tour courses including night cruises and bus tours that will take you to the factory nightscapes. Photographing from the seaside means you can get some powerful compositions by capturing distillation columns and smokestacks from top to bottom. When lit-up at night, you can see “the castle of light.” I personally prefer the magic hour when tints of blue remain in the sky, but I should say that the castle of light in the pitch dark night is also impressive.

"Kamakura is blessed with delicious natural ingredients. After sightseeing, enjoy the gourmet cuisine in Kamakura. You should check the wide variety of vegetables called “Kamakura Yasai.” Grown on the rich soil of warm Kamakura, today, the high-quality vegetables bear the Kamakura brand. Amble down Komachi-Dori Street around 10 minutes from Kamakura Station, and you'll find a hideaway-like restaurant named “Brasserie Yukinoshita” where fresh seafood from Misaki fishing port and Kamakura Yasai are abundantly served. On this photogenic dish, “Kamakura Yasai with Bagna Cauda,” assorted colorful vegetables are arranged like Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement). Each and every one of the vegetables taste so fresh, so crunchy, and so delicious! If you wish to taste Kamakura Yasai, this dish is for you."

Daikoku Pier West Green Area that offers an up-close view of Yokohama Bay Bridge is a sanctuary for night photographers. From here you can see the lights of skyscrapers in Minato Mirai District and the brilliantly shining Ferris wheels of Yokohama Cosmo World Amusement Park. If you could capture a luxury cruise ship passing under the illuminated Yokohama Bay Bridge, you'll be rewarded with some powerful and gorgeous photos. For nighttime shooting, I recommend you come by bus, but you must note that fewer buses operate on weekends.
