Nishiizu, Dogashima, Sightseeing Boat Boarding Point

Address:2052-1 Nishina, Nishiizu, Kamo-gun, Shizuoka 410-3514, Japan

This is Dogashima in Nishiizu. A Natural Monument, the Tensodo Cave is a marine cave composed of tuff. The cave has three mouths in the east, south, and west. The southward mouth leads you to the wide grotto that stretches to 147m. The ceiling in the center is caved in, forming a skylight that lets sunlight pour through the cave. It's always fascinating to see the color of the water there varying in season, time, and weather. The Rugby World Cup games in Shizuoka are scheduled in September and October when it can be still hot. So, it'll be nice to visit Nishiizu before and after the games for a cool sea breeze!

Mt. Fuji World Heritage Centre, Shizuoka

Address:5-12 Miyachō, Fujinomiya-shi, Shizuoka-ken 418-0067, Japan

EOS R EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM 1/400sec F6.3 ISO100

The Centre has three areas: an exhibit wing, the north wing, and the west wing. The central area has the unique design of an inverted cone covered in wood lattice. Inside the cone, visitors are treated to a virtual ascent of Mt. Fuji. The walkway spirals upward past walls decorated with monitors showing sights and a time-lapse video of the route up the mountain. On clear days, upon reaching the "summit," visitors can gaze out at the real Mt. Fuji, which is just as stunning as its pictures.

Fuji City Tea Plantations

Address:〒419-0205 Shizuoka-ken, Fuji-shi, Tenma, Unnamed Road

EOS 6D EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM 2sec F13.0 ISO500

From the latter half of April to May, the late-season snow of Mt. Fuji is framed by brilliant green shoots of new tea leaves. The spot is great for photographing gorgeous tea terraces that are the artistic symbol of Shizuoka. Although one can find tea fields and the namesake mountain in the background in many similar Fuji-city locations, this spot is my favorite for its depth and artistic beauty. (When taking pictures, please follow proper etiquette and ensure that you do not touch the tea plants, enter the fields, or cause any nuisance to farmers or the surrounding environment.)

Tatsuo Shrine features an orchard with weeping plum trees that are at their best around mid-March. Visitors are especially delighted and amazed when the impressive weeping plums are in full bloom. Kakegawa Castle, which can be seen from the orchard, provides a quintessentially Japanese scenery in the spring.

Visitors can dine on young raw or steamed sardines caught fresh that very morning. Most highly recommended is the Aka-Fuji bowl, which resembles its namesake by offering young raw sardines that glisten white, topped with egg yolk and amadare sauce. Reasonably priced sashimi—fresh and delicious raw fish—offers another enticing dish for fish lovers.
